Cooksville Commuter Wellness
A series of artworks co-created with Cooksville community who shared answers to the prompt “what makes Cooksville special?” The artwork was inspired by sketches captured during the event and community contributions.
Community responses included a story of a newcomer to Canada not having money for a mask during Covid. He was given a mask for free by a kind shop keeper, and once he got a job he came back to repay the shop keeper.
Some children said “you can make different types of friends" and "I like the Cooksville sign with the big C, especially in the winter." Many loved the community, the diversity, the proximity to everything like shopping and food. There was nostalgia from long time residents and excitement for ongoing changes from younger residents.
This was part of the Mo(ve)ment event hosted at the Four Corners in Cooksville by STEPS, Heart Comonos and the City of Mississauga. Commuters passing through were given free breakfast and coffee from Halo Espresso Bar with uplifting messages written by Lisa Shen and Ayomide Bayowa (Mississauga Poet Laureates) in the morning. Live painting and music by Cat Bernardi occurred during evening commute.
