A Long Long Time Ago
A first foray into stop motion animation, created during my time as a resident at Spark Box Studios summer of 2017. This work has been featured in Here and Now at the Living Arts Centre and VAM’s 40th Annual Juried Art Show at the Gallery of Mississauga in 2017. It was part of Photophobia: Contemporary Moving Image Festival hosted by the Art Gallery of Hamilton and Hamilton Artists Inc in August 2019.
A playful papercut projection influenced by traditional Chinese shadow puppetry. This animation is based on an improvised rhyming verse my mother used to recite to me when I was younger. She in turn learned it from her friends and elders in Saigon, Vietnam. This is a variation of a common wordplay that is passed on from generation to generation, similar to the way children’s playground songs are learned.
